Education key to safety
One Lucky Couple

A short story of a couple who decided to go for a paddle boat ride two weeks after the ice disappeared off the lake. They were dressed in leather coats, the lady had high heels on and were about to head out into the lake with not even one life jacket.

The water was so cold that you would only have minutes to get to land if you tipped over and there were no boats on the lake to rescue them, no one even had their docks out yet. Even worst the wind was up, try paddle boating against the wind in the middle of the lake and see how far you go.

I approached them and pleaded with them not to go out dressed the way they were and without life jackets and to stay close to shore, but I couldn't get my message across to them.

Half hour later there they were in the middle of the lake, dressed the same, had life jackets but not on, just sitting on floor of paddle boat.

Good new is that an hour later they were back on land safe and sound. They were lucky, two days later that same paddle boat was about to be used when they noticed the steering wasn't working. A pin had broke and the steering mechanism was gone making in next to impossible to navigate the boat in the middle of the lake. Your under the control of the wind.

Our lakes are beautiful and they give us a lot of pleasure but please respect them. Please educate yourself on the safety procedures before going out on any lake or river for a safe return.
